Lightning-Fast Percentage Calculations

Many common percentages have simple shortcuts that make mental calculation instant.

10% - The Foundation

10% = divide by 10 (move decimal point left one place)

• 10% of 250 = 25
• 10% of 3,840 = 384
• 10% of 67 = 6.7

Building from 10%

Once you know 10%, you can get many others:

5% = half of 10%

• 5% of 200: 10% = 20, so 5% = 10

20% = double 10%

• 20% of 300: 10% = 30, so 20% = 60

15% = 10% + 5%

• 15% of 80: 10% = 8, 5% = 4, so 15% = 12

30% = triple 10%

• 30% of 150: 10% = 15, so 30% = 45

25% - Quarter Shortcut

25% = divide by 4 (or half, then half again)

• 25% of 200 = 200 ÷ 4 = 50
• 25% of 84 = 84 ÷ 4 = 21

Alternatively:

• 25% of 84: half = 42, half again = 21

50% - Half

50% = divide by 2

• 50% of 360 = 180
• 50% of 97 = 48.5

75% - Three Quarters

75% = 50% + 25% or 100% - 25%

• 75% of 200: 50% = 100, 25% = 50, so 150
• Or: 100% - 25% = 200 - 50 = 150

33⅓% - One Third

33⅓% ≈ divide by 3

• 33⅓% of 300 = 300 ÷ 3 = 100
• 33⅓% of 90 = 30

66⅔% - Two Thirds

66⅔% = 2 × 33⅓% or 100% - 33⅓%

• 66⅔% of 150: ⅓ = 50, so ⅔ = 100

1% - For Precision

1% = divide by 100 (move decimal left two places)

• 1% of 3,500 = 35
• 1% of 840 = 8.4

Then multiply for other percentages:

• 7% = 7 × 1%
• 12% = 12 × 1%

Real-World Examples

Restaurant tip (15%):

• Bill: $80
• 10% = $8
• 5% = $4
• Tip = $8 + $4 = $12

Sales discount (30% off):

• Price: $250
• 10% = $25
• 30% = $75
• Pay: $250 - $75 = $175

Tax (8%):

• Item: $45
• 10% = $4.50
• 8% = $4.50 - $0.90 = $3.60
• Total: $48.60
